Bird key is an island in Sarasota Bay, located between mainland Sarasota and St. Armands Key. This convenient location is within a few minutes of world class shopping on St. Armands and the downtown Sarasota amenities including live theater, ballet, and Palm Avenue art galleries. Residents of the island are surrounded by manicured landscaping, nature, and the relaxing waters of Sarasota Bay.
Bird Key is considered a boaters paradise, with many of the homes on the island positioned directly on Sarasota Bay or on deep water canals. The canals and bayfront luxury homes as well as the Bird Key private yacht club, all contribute to the desirability of the community. Boaters enjoy extra-wide waterways and quick access to the Gulf of Mexico.
The canal front and bay front homes on the island can accommodate large yachts and sailboats, and the bay front estates offer unparalleled views of the Sarasota Bay and Downtown Sarasota.
Originally the small twenty five acre Bird Key island was the home of John Ringling North, nephew of Circus Magnate John Ringling. Bird Key was enlarged by dredge and fill in the late fifties, it is now approximately 250 acres and one of the most prestigious residential areas on Florida’s West Coast. Bird Key’s most attractive feature of all, according to its 1959 sales brochure, is “the sheer beauty of Bird Key’s tropical vista.” Some things have not changed at all.
The island was named Bird Key because of the large population of birds that at one time flocked to the island. The streets of Bird Key are named after some of the birds that are native to Sarasota, including Meadow Lark Drive, Spoonbill Drive, and Seagull Lane. Today just over 500 residents call Bird Key home.
There are no high-rise condos on Bird Key, but there are single family homes available with prices ranging from approximately $550,000 up to $9.5 million.
